new carbide chisels

samedi 30 mai 2015

Hi all,

At the last Melbourne wood show I bought a popular brand name carbide tip chisel. I thought it would be great not having to sharpen my HSS chisels any more and just rotate the carbide if it ever got blunt.

It really hasn't turned out as well as i would have liked. I tried it on a pen blank the other day and ended up swapping back to my HSS as the carbide just felt like a blunt, old HSS chisel. I also didn't like the bulky neck meaning i had to drop the tool rest to achieve the same approach. It might be okay for roughing out bowl blanks but i cant imagine it'll be much good for anything else?

Has anyone tried the HHS inserts? I don't really see the point of them though as I may as well just use my old chisels if I'm going down that path.

As usual, any advice is very appreciated.

Kind regards,

Ash.

Second go

This is my second attempt at a bandsaw box this one was made for our woodnmusic festival the woodwork had to have some form of music theme and the songwriting side of the competition had to have a timber theme.
The event finishes today and has had very good attendance to workshops and display's.
Regards Rod.

Gel coat finish

:) I would like to know if this product Cabot's Clear Gel Gloss is still available & if so where or who would stock this, I live in the Riverina,NSW. Also if this product is not available, what similar product could I use. I used Cabot's Clear Gel Gloss a few years ago to finish a large fish tank stand that I made & it came up a million dollars & have searched everywhere to buy more, but no luck.
Thanks in advance.

22Kt Gold & Rhodium Majestic

Hi Guys,

Between last night and today I managed to put this one together. Not sure who I got the blank off, although I seem to remember getting it as a thank you for something I had done for Gawdelplus or Neil. Although I cannot remember what Mmmm!! Anyhow it is one awesome blank with a mix of coloured resin and a QLD Nut Gawl turned and finished into what I think is a very nice looking pen.

Thanks
Tony

Makita Biscuit Jointer Dust Extraction

I got sick of the useless dust bag on my Makita biscuit jointer. The standard plastic adaptor would always clog when working with solid timber. So I made up a new adaptor to allow me to attach my Festool DE. It works a treat. I can't believe I put up with it for 20 years!

And no, the plastic casing of the biscuit jointer isn't melted and distorted. That's just my clumsy airbrushing of the photo to blot out my name.
