Out of round solution

samedi 31 mai 2014

I have become more self-critical about my pens and am particularly focused on fit, ie transition bw pen parts and blanks. I've noticed that that on some of the pens, even the latest ones have non-concentric parts, they are out by a smidgeon, but nonetheless they're out. I want to be able to at least get the transition bw the nib and the lower barrel spot on. I have a mandrel saver but i think the hole in it is slightly enlarged and that gave me a bit of run-out, i switched to just the brass nut but there's still a bit of vibration resulting in a less than perfect fit. The mandrel rod is straight, centres line up, i'm now contemplating turning bw centres, what do you think? You can't see any non-concentricity while the lathe is turning but there is a little vibration there.

Dovetail Cutter

I intend to make a QCTP for my lathe. It needs either a CXA or CA size. Buying these is a very expensive proposition. I am not likely to get one for less than I paid for the lathe. Certainly they are more than I can afford.

Can anyone offer suggestions regarding a source for 60 degree dovetail cutters? I am thinking to go for about 40mm diameter. CTC has one, but it is only HSS AL

I am guessing I will not want to be restricted in feed rate for the amount of cutting I will need to do.

I have no idea about your job, but my book says you are doing it wrong.

Upon a visit to my Son's high school MDT department I was left shaking my head in disbelief.

Firstly, the MDT department is being halved in size to make way for an expanded art room, secondly and this is the real issue that has got right up my nose. The teacher is currently going through a long, drawn out process to justify keeping the MDT bandsaw. How precisely are you meant to operate an MDT department without one? As it stands, it is a teacher operation only tool, which is fair enough. It has the obligatory guarding, lockable isolator switch, yellow painted line bordered exclusion zone, dust extraction etc etc etc. The horrid little safety germ pulling the strings from his office 200 Km away is concerned that while operating the saw with a large workpiece, the teacher could hit a student with the piece of wood being cut.

I am angry on two grounds. Firstly, this illustrates how little understanding and respect there is within the education system for trade type pursuits. Secondly it makes patently clear, the lack of understanding that many safety germs possess about the actual risks they are managing.

Now, I know a thing or two about risk management having been a tradesman for well over 20 years and a ticketed Health and Safety rep to boot. If performing a risk assessment upon that very machine, the risk posed by hitting a student with a piece of wood pales into insignificance compared to the other hazards, all of which have been mitigated and effectively controlled from my observation. In fact, the congestion produced by the reduction in size of the department in my opinion produces a far greater level of risk, given more frequent exposure to numerous hazards and potentially serious consequences.

Will they remove the chisels next?

I should add that the MDT is the lifeblood and soul of the teacher, who through his tireless efforts has managed to connect with and divert many disadvantaged youth onto a productive path that has lead to employment. The teacher is absolutely gutted that 15 years work is effectively being devalued and thrown away. I don't blame him for one minute and have committed to giving him whatever support I can to fight this idiotic directive.

A NEW DIMENSION

A couple of castings I did some time ago that I though I would try on Sierra stylus pen kits. The first 2 are burl with blue and red resin. The photo, being only 2 dimensional, doesn't show it up properly but when looking at the pen it has a 3 dimensional appearance with the timber appearing as higher than the blue and the blue as higher than the red. This one is a keeper.

The second pen is a swirl resin which I did when I was experimenting with mixing resins.

Pen Order

The first photo is of an order for 25 Sierras in Tasmanian timbers I received - Fiddleback and Huon. Its a long boring process making the same pen but its worth it in terms of sales. The stylus pens are all finished in 20 coats of CA and then polished with Carnauba wax. The pens are for guest speakers at a conference and will be presented in flock cases from Timberbits.

The second pen is one that was ordered via my website on Friday. I managed to get it done for posting this week. Its a slimline in Tasmanian Myrtle. Tasmanian timber seems popular at the moment.

Service trench in slab????

Just signed up today to build a new house/shed combination and had to do up a proposed layout to work out where I want the doors and to make sure I can fit all my existing toys and goodies in there. No matter how I lay it out, I still find myself wanting to avoid having the DC hoses and power leads coming from above or across the floor. I haven't spoken to the concreter yet but I want to try for a trench with maybe lift-off sections of gang-plate level with the slab covering a trench about 150mm x 150mm square from the edge of the slab to the south or east where the DC will be in a cubicle outside the shed. It would only have to pass by the Hammer and go to the big bandsaw so it wouldn't be much more than about 5m long. Thinking this would reduce the length the DC has to pull by about 5 metres of up and down for overhead ducting.

Looking for ideas - Has anyone out there ever done or contemplated this sort of set up ??????

Where to get partridge wood or wenge?

Making up a 3 ball handle

I picked up 3 boxes of blanks (diameter 30, 42 and 75) at the C&A clearance sale. All the nice stuff had too many zeros:~.

P1020338 (Medium).JPG

The question was asked how do you make up a 3 ball handle so armed with one of these blanks (which I think is 1040), I set out to find out.

First, rough out the shape

P1020341 (Medium).JPG

Then put the angle onto the bits in between. Incidentally, someone was asking about oversize ER40 collets. This is what I am using to hold the stock. They work very nicely.

P1020339 (Medium).JPG P1020340 (Medium).JPG

Once the angles are in place, whip out the trusty ball turner and start shaping the balls. The largest ball is only half shaped because there is a chuck in the way...

P1020343 (Medium).JPG

A close up at this stage. The tool in the ball turner is a piece of broken tap ground on an angle, so it leaves a radius in the corners. I find that if it blends it is harder to clean up with the file than if it is left as a step. After cleaning up with the file and polishing with emery it looks more the part.

P1020344 (Medium).JPG P1020346 (Medium).JPG

I then parted off and tried shaping the back of the large ball. I first tried packing it with thin card but the chuck did not like that so I ended up making a split bush with a matching taper that would hold the handle firm enough and concentric enough that I could shape the back end. Even so work was required with the file to get the halves meeting in the middle.

P1020348 (Medium).JPG

The split bush also came in handy for holding the handle blank in the mill while machining the flats on the handle and putting the through hole in.

P1020349 (Medium).JPG

Easier than I thought it would be but it still took several hours. The steel machined very nicely so I'm glad I got it. The other ball handles I've been making are in the J&S thread as that is what they were made for. Anyone know anyone who needs a 3 ball handle? I have a spare.

The Bus Ride

The Bus Ride

Two bowling teams, one of all Blondes and one of all Brunettes, charter a double-Decker bus for a weekend

Trip to Sydney

The Brunette team rode on the bottom of the bus, and

The Blonde team rode on the top level.

The Brunette team down below really whooped it up,

Having a great time, when one of them realized she

Hadn't heard anything from the Blondes upstairs. She

Decided to go up and investigate.

When the Brunette reached the top, she found all the

Blondes in fear, staring straight ahead at the road,

Clutching the seats in front of them with white knuckles.

The brunette asked, 'What the heck's going on up here?

We're having a great time downstairs!'

One of the Blondes looked up at her, swallowed hard

And whispered...

'YEAH, BUT YOU'VE GOT A DRIVER!!'

Woodfast / teknatool jaw compatibility

Anyone know if the jaws from teknatool and woodfast chucks are usable on each others chucks?

I.e. are the bolt patterns the same?

What have I brought?

vendredi 30 mai 2014

Hi Everyone,

Spent $100 and outbidded the local scrapy. Looked too interesting to let go. It has a stick on decal but I cannot read it. It looks to be all there including the 6hp 3ph motor, switches and cord. Was hoping some of the older industry people may have used or know its brand etc.

I think it's worth a polish and paint job.

Painted tube acrylic

Hi,

It was suggested by Dorno and LRG that I should paint the brass tubes of my acrylic pens. So I bought some nail polish and gave it a try. The pen is a Baron 2 rollerball and it is for a graduation present.

Thanks the tip guys, it is much appreciated.
