Which way to connect a 3 phase motor?

dimanche 31 août 2014

I have an old 5hp 3 phase motor and have access to all points of the windings. My question is which way to wire it star or delta?

The motor is rated 400/440V but it doesn't mention star or delta on the nameplate ... but it does mention the current as being 7 Amps MESH (I think it was 7). I think the "MESH" stamped on the nameplate answers the question, but I'm unable to determine what it means.

Any help appreciated.

BTW I have it currently running in star config and it is running (but under no load).

Keepsake Box with 100 year old SGS badge

Hello all,

I just finished this box for my cousin's son who attends SGS. My father wanted him to have it when he passed away.

Dad's father's brother George (K.I.A. July 1918) wore it to cadets in 1910. Dad then wore it in 1945-48.

The timber is Qld Maple (taken from Dad's dad's last project, he died when dad was 12) and Murray River Red gum. I have used powdered aluminium as a feature in the sides and recessed the badge. The base is lined with pig skin and the timber finished with Hard Burnishing Oil.

It measures 180mm x 180mm x 140mm.

A lot of history for William to pass on!

regards

New trade tools router vs old Makita (or other)

Hi all,

I've just recently started getting into wood work. The next piece of equipment I'm looking at getting is a router. It's primary use will be in a table (which I still need to make). The main use for it will be doing rebate and box joins in ~20mm hoop pine. I've been using someone else's 1hp 1/4" router, with a 21mm bit. (that bit does everything I need). It seems to burn the wood somewhat, and cuts through the wood a bit slow, but it could just be because the bit is starting to get a bit blunt I think.

Anyway, it's time to get my own, and I would rather keep the cost below ~$200. The 1500W 1/2" one from trade tools has all the features, but I am suspicious of it at the price of ~$130 including a 15 piece router set. The other alternative is to get something like a a 3600BR (I've seen them ~$150 for good condition 2nd hand ones), but it doesn't have things like variable speed (which apparently I want with the size of bits that I am using). I also plan on using it quite a bit, so I would rather something that will last. I'm hoping this doesn't mean I should spend ~$400 on one.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

One that didn't make the show

Did not have enough time to finish this one before the show.

Was so close i finished it today.

My new Hercus 9C and 3 phase.

Hello all, Just got myself a 1972 Hercus 9C, came with some cutting tools, chucks and 2x 3 jaw chucks?

But sadly no gears for threads.

Great thing is everything is tight and apart from a few nicks on the bed it seems in great condition with very little wear.

Only draw back is it is three phase and the cost to connect to my place i cannot afford.

I want to keep it 3 phase and am willing to buy a vfd. Now if i could convert the motor to 240v 3ph it would be nice (and cheaper) but seems the motor is only delta?

I am otherwise happy to get a 240>415 VFD from drives direct to get it running.

Ok a few pics.

The Hercus 9C.

Ok this is the motor plate:

And inside the motor wiring box:

It came on a stand not sure if they had factory stands/tables but it has built in controls and another electrical plate on the door?

Inside the stand it has electrical tranny and wiring diagram:

Now if one of you smarter bloke could confirm if the motor is star or delta it would be much appreciated.

And if it was able to be run on 240v i would assume that the transformer and all in the cupboard would have to be changed aswell?

Thanks

Luke

HORSE WHITTLING - a tribute.

A couple of snaps of my latest carving , it's in Lime & stands just under 6" tall.

The outline pattern was taken from the book "Carving Wooden Horses" by

Eric Zimmerman, a book which showed me when I was just setting out carving the true potential of using a pen knife alone to carve wood, there is little or no instruction within this long out of print book but I have never seen better carving whether it be from a knife or chisel of a horse . Those darkly lit grainy photos of his exquisite miniature horses inspired me throughout decades of carving - & I'm still miles away !

I wished there were a book like that to inspire future generations as to the possibilities of excellence using just a knife but standard are falling rather than rising in whittling books if Amazon is anything to go by.

Truck with dump trailer

Made from beech, plans are from http://ift.tt/1hiwv3f. The exhaust stacks were removed after finishing the truck because the misses (who runs a small daycare at our home) thought they were a hazard to little children's eyes (I have to agree). That is why only the base part of the exhaust is left.As always, comments are welcome.

The Pink Box

Hi all,

l was requested by my 5 year old daughter to make a new jewellery/keep sake box as her ever growing collection of necklaces, bracelets, and other stuff out grew the old one. So we went into the shed and found some pine that would fit the bill, all good I thought, then came the curve ball......I want it pink:o. Now I could of painted it I know, but I wanted to still see the wood, so I thought I would give dyeing a go.

This box is a first for me in many ways, the first box I have finished with hand cut dovetails that is not hiding somewhere out of site, the first time I have dyed (ubeaut red) wood and used shellac (ubeaut white shellac), the first time I raised a panel by hand (the lid) and the first time I have ever lined anything with paper.

so here it is.... Go easy on me....

A pine dovetailed box, lined with Japanese paper, dyed pink, finished with white shellac and furniture polish.

One happy girl

Toilet paper for woodies

NSW Delta Dust Collector 50-840 + spare bag

Delta Dust Collector 50-840 + spare bag.

Not used for many years.

1 HP

2850 rpm

240v

Manufactured 5/1998

S/N CJ9821 / 1612

Inlet port diameter is for 100mm hose.

When I bought the entire workshop contents of Tony Wilson in 2007, there were two dust collectors. I put the big Jet DC1200 with the pleated canister into use and the Delta has languished in the loft since, unused by me.

Tony is since deceased so I cannot ask him, but he was fanatical about dust collection (also had a Jet room filter), so my guess is that he did not use the Delta for long before upgrading to the Jet. I also guess he bought it from Carbatec when they used to sell Delta.

I have cleaned the loft to make room and a few unused things have to go. The photo shows the beast running smoothly, the first time I have ever started it.

Pick up Birchgrove (Balmain area), Sydney.

A toy for a BIG boy

I have been requested to make a D6 Caterpillar Bulldozer, about a 1943 model fitted with hydraulic workings of the dozer blade which were not available until the late fifties. I have put this in the toy section as I don't wish to create any problems as it is not true to scale.

The wheels and indexing of gears has been covered before on other models, now for the links , they are 32 x 8 x 8, the end halving was done on the router table, pivots drilled one end 4 mm the other 11/64,the scallop in the top edge was done using the same block that held to do the ends, a jig was made to round the ends on the disc sander.

With the number of operations ( 2500 plus ) to do these links I decided to make two TOYS at the same time, one for myself.

Some photos of the router set up, jig for rounding ends and one of the links completed on the wheels to get the axle spacings. John.

Buffing Setup

I have managed to pick up this Buffing Spindle from a steel fabricator that was throwing it out. It was used to buff up stainless steel (you can see the remnants of a buffing wheel on the left hand end). To give an idea of size, the spindle is 1200mm long and 30mm diameter. Unfortunately I did not get the full stand or motor that went with it. A couple of questions that the forum might be able to help with:

1. What speed do you normally run these at? Bench grinders are normally 2800 RPM (I think) - is this the optimal speed for a buffing wheel?

2. What size motor?

3. Has anyone got any suggestions for the stand?

4. Any other things that I should consider (variable speed? reverse direction?).

QLD Antique Mitre clamp - very unique

This is a real work of art. It would be more than 100 yearsold with the patent number within the casting. It is designed for clampingmitres and someone has put a lot of thought into it. When you wind the clamp inthe two knurled wheels on top rotate via the gearing to bite in and pull themitres in nice and tight. Everything is in very nice condition with close tofull original black japanning remaining. Theres also an unrelated small clamp thrown in which can be seen in one photo. A real conversation piece for theantique tool collector. Pick up from Ascot for $25.

What to do with a Stanley 10 1/2

Gents

I was visiting during the week and saw someone using/abusing an old plane. I convinced them that it should be restored or at least cleaned up. It is marked No 10 1/2 in front of the tote but no other marking on the main casting. Tote has a crack, knob is broken. Cleaning up the iron a bit reveals "Stanley New Britain Conn USA".

The question is should it be cleaned up and have its history destroyed by stripping the japanning?

Is it valuable in its current condition?

He doesn't need the money so should I pretty the whole thing up as a display piece?

How old might it be?

The knob is unusual. As tall as a No 3 but fatter. Where could one be sourced?

All information gladly received.
