Glue for laminated curves?

samedi 30 août 2014

I am in the process of preparing to build a tallboy for my wife (yes - I had lots of difficulty with this description as well! :o :U)

The drawer fronts are intended to curved inward. Rather than forming these from solid wood, where it will be more work to ensure that the fronts are coplanar, a laminated construction will offer the advantages of a similar fair curve. It should also be stronger as there will be less grain run out at the ends.

The curve will be fairly gentle, however I do want a glue that will be rigid (minimise spring back) and especially not show glue lines (I am likely to be building out of Makore, which is similar to Jarrah). I am not keen on epoxy here (although I have used it for years) since it will not inhibit spring back.

I have hunted all over the Internet for urea formaldehyde glues in Oz, and cannot find a supplier. Can anyone comment on such glue, and if it is available.

The other alternative I have come up with is Gorilla glue, which I have not used before. Similarly, any comments and recommendations?

Any other suggestions? Do I just stick to Titebond liquid hide glue?

Regards from Perth

Derek
