How to make a wooden pentagon knob?

mardi 30 juin 2015

Hello, I would like to make a wooden pentagon knob as shown, about 40mm OD, with a 5/16" threaded insert in the centre, but not right through, unlike the one in the picture.

Can anyone please advise on the best way to design and cut one of these?

Picture Frame

I have has a poster for about 18 months from a holiday to Tasmania, but only just got around to making a frame.

I found some old red cedar weather boards in a salvage yard, that after a clean up and a sand, came up a treat.

This frame was finished simply in a spray Estapol, but I have also finished another in wipe on poly, which I think I like better.

QLD Cheap tools. Gotta get em travellin.

NOT AN AUCTION

Selling some small tools which have been occupying my real estate for too long. Most of these are relics from a time during which I was uncertain where my woodworking interested lay, so I just thought I would try them all.

- Set of small Japanese carving chisels. Various shapes including some gouges, skews, corner chisels, etc. I bought these thinking I was interested in carving. I've used a few for inlay but not in months. Gotta go. I think they cost me $15.

- Set of three rasps. These are available at the hardware store. There's a flat one, a half-round, and a rattail. I actually still use these but I've got a set of French rasps coming any day now. Gotta go. Originally $20.

- Set of diamond files. Virtually unused. Not sure what I've used them on or why I ever bought them. I think I must've blacked out... No idea what they cost.

- Set of three sharpening stones. Unopened. Was planning to use this to sharpen the aforementioned carving chisels. I think it was like $15.

- Kinichrome etching tool. I bought this to fine tune the edges of inlay mortises (if that's the right word). Wasn't really suited to the task. Still a functioning tool for what it's intended. I think it was $20 maybe?

Anyway, They're 5 bucks each. Buy four get the fifth for free. Happy to ship. Also happy to discuss trades. If you've got a couple of good saw files laying around we can talk turkey.

Cheers,
Luke

Still playing with chemical etching

Well I have decided I like the chemical etch on brass better than the rotary engraving or a stamp. Seems more definitive with the darkening. Phosphoric acid highlight.
The plate I am not so sure about. I may try to darken it a bit. But what ever I use I don't want it to rub off. Burnishing wheels etc. will tend to clean those etches right out. I like to stay with a semi gloss on the plates. Thoughts?

QLD Dremel 3000 kit

NOT AN AUCTION

Selling my Dremel 3000. Haven't used it in a long time, and I'm trying to purge some tools so here it is for a steal.

Includes the extension head thing and router attachment. Also includes some burr bits and a trim router bit which were purchased after getting the kit.

I basically bought this thing thinking I could replace a bunch of different tools with it and realized that wasn't the case and I needed heavier duty stuff. Nonetheless it is working fine and, when applied to tasks at the right scale, is a great tool to have.

I haven't taken a terribly detailed photo. If you want to see more I can, but I'm hoping that the low price will sell it as is. Includes a lot of the original bits. Also includes my (miserably failed) attempt at a homemade sanding mop. That should be good for a laugh. You might get some use out of the mandrel.

$60. Pickup in Dutton Park, Brisbane. Happy to ship.

Cheers,
Luke

Another Hide Glue Pot

G'day.

Here is a quick overview with pics of my hide glue set up.

I got a cheap $7 electric jug from Big W & I also found an electric fondue pot. (Can't remember the price, less than $30)

It has 2 settings & the high setting will hold the pot half full of water at a fairly steady 65°C.

I don't need much glue for the little bit I use it so I divided my pearls into 20g zip lock bags.

I found a coffee scoop that held 20mil of water.

To get started I put one scoop of water into one bag & left it to sit & soak the pearls.

While that was soaking, I warmed up some water in the jug & put it in the fondue pot & let it sit to stabilize.

I then submerged the ziplock bag in the warm water in the fondue pot & buzzed off to get a coffee.

While I was sipping my coffee, I'd take the bag out & massage it to mix the glue to dissolve all the lumps.

The end result was a small ziplock bag of liquid hide glue ready to use at 65°C.

The hot air gun you can see in the pic was used to warm the surfaces to be glued to give me just a bit more open time.

First Segmented Pen

On another Pen turning forum we had a competition to make a segmented pen, this was my entry that took first place which I did not think was to bad as I had never done segmented work to this scale before or even on a pen. And like on here I left it until the last moment and from selecting the wood and pen kit until posting the pictures took 2 1/2 days including all the cutting of the blank staining the cherry wood, glue drying, turning and finishing.

Anyway here it is the kit is a zeta pen which is slightly smaller than a sierra pen. the woods used are beech and cherry veneer which was stained purple to contrast better with the beech.

Oak Bowl

I have had this blank sitting in the wood shed for some time, anyway thought I would have a go at turning it.

This measures 13" across and is 2" deep and as the title is from Oak which was hard many trips to the grinder even after attacking it with a carbide tool.

Sanded to 600grit and finished with Cellulose sander sealer and the on to the wheeled buffing system.

Cheap 1/2" router for router table wing in TS

G'day,

I finally got around to fitting a custom wooden router table back into my jet tablesaw ( came with it and made by the previous owner but had been uninstalled). I thought originally to mount the little Makita 3620, but the plunge is quite small and I would have to keep taking it off for routing larger pieces and freehand work etc.

Soooo, and cost is critical here, I am considering a very cheap 1/2" router to fix semi-permanently to the router plate insert. I thought that variable speed was probably a must, but the routers seem to have fairly small holes really so not sure how critical.

The ROK 1800w has variable speed, is $100, (same as craftsman Clarke CR3) at Beyond tools. 60mm plunge
The Wesco ( same as Rockwell) 1500w is only $85 at Masters 50 mm plunge

Both the above have safety on off switches which require two buttons to be pressed to start, and appear spring loaded. Not the end of the world as it could be velcroed on and a remote switch used, but annoying.

Alternatively I could just about spring for the Maktec MT360 for $160 which has no variable speed but at least has a proper switch.

I am not planning on doing spindle moulding, the biggest I plan would be a round over up to 3/4" radius and mostly smaller diameter bits.

Your thoughts?

Sound effects in Word

Some years ago, I wrote several stories using Word running on XP. The stories revolved around jet aircraft and trains. At the time I managed to download some fantastic sound effects. Low pass jets flying over, diesel locos idling, I can almost smell the diesel fumes,......... ahem, sorry, I'm getting carried away. Playback thru my Bose desk top sound system was amazing.

When that computer blew up, I bought another and installed Windows 7.

Now when I load my old stories, the sound effects no longer work.

Q. Is there a better Word type program that I can insert sound effects into. Would need to copy my original Word text across first.

SCM 630 Thicknesser Setup

Hi,

I am setting up my new SCM 630 thicknesser and have encountered some problems with the timber feeding.

I have cleaned the table and the feed rollers appear to be in good working order.

I believe it has something to do with the rear pressure plate that sits directly behind the cutterhead.

Am I correct in saying that the pressure plate helps to reduce snipe on the ends of the timber?

When I first started the machine up, the timber got stuck on the pressure plate. Upon inspection, the pressure plate was projecting approx 10mm lower than the cutterhead. If I pushed on the pressure plate, it would move up, however, this is not easy due to the weight of the plate and the angle it was being pushed from due to sitting so low.

I readjusted it so the grub screws held it so the cutterhead was approx 2mm below the plate. This allowed timber to feed through easily, however, the timber has snipe.

I have an instructional printout of the machine. Poor pictures but I can read the text. It explains that the pressure plate needs to be set so it projects 2mm below the cutterhead. I have re-set the machine to this, however, the only way to get it to sit in this position is to tighten the grub screws and this does not allow the timber to easily pass.

1 of the grub screws looks like it is broken or worn (missing the end and looks different to it's opposing one), however, I can not see how this affects how the plate sits.

I am wondering if the pressure plate must project only 2mm below the cutterhead, but still be allowed to hinge up as the timber approaches and passes.

I hope I have made sense on this.

I have added some pics. Unfortunately, they are not very clear.

Thank you in advance,

Andrew.

Wanted to borrow

Blowed if I know where to put this post, so it's here where I know everyone.

I would like to borrow, just to try out, a 500kg chain type lever hoist, just for a weekend. I'm in Heidelberg but will travel.

If the chain hoist suits my needs, I'll go and buy one, or buy your's if you don't use it.

Let's just say it's for pulling something out of the ground.

NSW Complete Woodturning Setup & more

A friend and student of mine rang me the other day telling me some medical issues has meant he can no longer do woodturning. He is also computer Illiterate so I offered to help him.
Consequently he has a great set of kit he want to get rid of.
He wants to sell it all as a job lot - does not want to sell it piecemeal.
Here is a list of many of the main items:
Nova TL1500 Lathe on stand (includes 2 Banjos)
Racal Dustmaster Helmet
1HP Dusty
Bowl Saver System
Deep Hollowing tools
6 Henry Taylor Chisels (Including a nice heavy shallow Roughing Gouge)
Vacuum Chuck system
Jacobs Chuck
Nova Chuck + additional jaws
Variable off centre Chuck
Forstner Bit Set
Power Drill with Power sand pad plus abrasive pads
50mm Wad Punch to cut abrasive disks
Some nice timber blanks
AND
A Jet Scroll Saw

I went and checked out this gear today and I am happy to recommend this collection.
At he asking price it would even be worth buying the lot, keeping what you want and selling the balance.

Happy to answer any questions.

So, what's the problem?

So, what's the problem?

A wife asks her husband,
"Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk and if they have avocados, get 6.

A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk.

The wife asks him, "Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?"

He replied, "They had avocados."

If you're a woman, I'm sure you're going back to read it again! Men will get it the first time.

My work is done here.

NSW WTB ~10mm Tassie Oak

Hi guys,

Had some good luck finding some timber on here last time so thought I'd try again :)

Looking for a few metres of Tasmanian Oak (or other pale brown timber) if anyone can help me out. Probably about 3.5m-4m of 150 x 10mm. It's for a couple of drawers, and exact dimensions aren't critical. I unfortunately don't have a huge setup so can't stockpile any timber :/

In fact also looking for 190 x 19mm and 135 x 19mm (about 8m and 6m respectively) - but since they're relatively standard I can grab those from a supplier if need be.

I'm located in Sydney - North Shore. Would love to know if you can help and if so what $$.

Thanks!

This might make some cry- scrap bin pics

This might make some cry. I was going past the scrap bin outside Fitting and Machining at work this arvo and as old habits die hard I had a quick look inside.
Look's like they have been having a clean up/out.

scrap 001.jpg scrap 02.jpg
Most of this is extruded Cast Iron about 75 -80 dia X about 80 -100 long. The orange thing is an old refrig compressor I think- probably for ammonia.

scrap 03.jpg
Black Mild steel about 50 dia X 50 long

scrap 04.jpg

More 50 X 50 buried in there plus a few clamps.
What you can't see in the pics is the small steel bench with half an old alignment exercise. Approx 50 dia shaft, about 500 long running in two good plummer block bearings bolted to a lump of 100 X 50 channel. Quantity of lawn mower bases with wheels and half disassembled motors (bought new for exercises, never cut grass) All damaged in one way or another but still lots of salvagable parts on them. I counted at least 3 cast iron flat belt pulleys. These were an old student turning exercise way back - probably up until the 1960's. About 250 dia X 60 wide. They kept a lot after the exercise was discontinued years ago to use as a balancing exercise. Plus lots of other scrap.
Now, to answer the question everyone is thinking- Did I salvage any of it? No I didn't. I dont have room for it plus the bin is about 1600 high ( I can just see into it standing on my toes) and nothing nearby that I could use to climb into it.

5x Dye Stabilised Buckeye Burl Block

Multi stabilising with different colours seems to be the latest craze in the USA and I thought I would give it a try with my Cactus Juice (CJ). Basically you apply one colour at a time without vacuum (ie just flooding/soaking to get it absorbed) but then baking it to fix the colour. You then add another colour repeating the process until the last colour that is applied under vacuum, filling any unstabilised areas, then baking to fix that colour too. You can get 4 basic colours (yellow/blue/green/red) for CJ but you can then mix them to make other colours.

I have a few blocks of Buckeye Burl (BEB) and chose this timber as it needs to be stabilised anyway. I also decided to use the 4 main colours, making up small quantities, then use a final colour of purple as I already had a 1ltr bottle from previously (a mix of leftover red and blue) under vacuum. As CJ needs 2 hours baking to set it at 200F it meant a total of 10 hours of baking. Before I even started I also put the block in my dehydrator overnight to ensure it was dry (been wet here). I also put it in the oven for 30mins to ensure the wood was hot to start with that helps with the dye penetration.

So yes a lot of effort but I was pretty impressed with the result. I managed to get 4 knife scales and 1 pen blank out of the block. Unfortunately I think I didn't bake the yellow enough as when the blue was applied it mixed with the yellow forming more green than I wanted inside the block. The purple I had was also more maroon but all good learnings. I gave all the blanks a quick coat of lacquer to pop the colour and grain.

BEB1.jpg BEB2.jpg

The photos show the book matched pairs (ie from the inside of the block), then the other sides where there are two similar colours x 2. I will probably sell all 4 eventually together, that way the buyer can chose if they want booked matched, or not book matched, but better colours :-. I will turn the pen blank, or get someone else to turn it, ASAP to show what the finished product looks like.

I have quite a few more blocks of BEB so will be experimenting again soon as I really like the result :2tsup:

Cheers

New member saying hi

G'day fellow woodworkers. Mick is my name and I'm a bit do a newbie. Took up the craft after we renovated our new home 18months ago. I use recycled timbers mainly. Have a mate who gets me pallets ranging from 1200mm up to 4.8 metres long and I also get lots of old timbers fm his farm and stuff he scrounges for building and Reno sites.
Started our very small with a little hall stand and now most of our house and our daughters' houses are furnished from our sheds.
All of my pallets have only ever been used to cart gyprock round on so no chemicals in the timber.
Now have quite a nice shed set up with mainly Makita and Bosch tools, but a smattering of some Ryobi and Ozito too.
I'm always looking for new ideas and tips and I'm really looking forward to looking around this forum.
cheers, Mick

TSA001 bearings

My TSA just started making a very rough noise, and when I turn it off there is something still slowing down inside after the blade has stopped. I can only guess that it's the bearings. Has anyone had experience of replacing them? Are they readily available?
Thanks
Chris
