Pair of stools

lundi 29 juin 2015

I was given a piece of oregon with a sentimental attachment, with a request to use it in a pair of twin stools for twin sisters.
Oregon (Douglas fir) isn't usually used as a furniture timber, and this piece was well weathered.

I first cleaned it up with water & detergent, then resawed it to two pieces and gave it a coat of shellac.

The mortices in the tops were cut perpendicular, and the tenons on the legs were cut on compound angles.

The hardest part was dying the freshly cut oregon in the undercarriage to match the tops. A series of tests using U-beaut dyes showed a mix of cedar, green-black and blue, under 2 coats of shellac, gave a reasonable match.
