I have been on my bicycle for the last 4 months, I have travelled from the bottom of the continent, Ushuaia (well its actually not on the continent but anyway) to San Pedro de Atacama, in northern Chile. The distance I have travelled on bicycle is about 5800km, I travelled twice in a car(total distance 120km), once I think I passed out, once I had a mechanical problem at altitude of 4500m in Chile and I cant fix it.
My original plan was to cycle through the Bolivian laguna and salar, Peruvian Andes, Ecuador Amazon and the final destination is Cartagena, Columbia. However I have chickened out now because the extreme cold in Bolivian lagunas (between -15 and -25 every night) and I kinda ran out of money.
I have travelled through the famous Patagonia, some say there is nothing in the Patagonia, thats because they either: have not been here, or have not traveled through this humongous area on a bicycle, after all, there is this forever headwind! lol I have cycled 3800km on the famous Ruta 40, I visited the breathtaking Carretera Austral in Autumn, I have seen wild puma, shoe size tranquila, road crossing snake, armadillo, caterpillar, nandu, Guanaco, Vicuna, llama (they love to do it slow when there are cars waiting), villages with no telephone but a VHF station, I have cycled the highest road in America continent, Abra del Acay (4943m), I have cycled through one of the highest border and pass in America, Paso Jama (4850m).... you name it, I have seen it.
Desolation is only the beginning in South America.
I have a blog that I am still uploading, I am still in San Pedro de Atacama.

Paso Jama, 4850m, the temperature is not that low, only -2 Celcius but when you combine it with the forever headwind(West to East, and I am riding East to West) in this area... it was so freaking cold its life threatening, I never feared hypothermia but I did while crossing Paso Jama, The road was unridable because the headwind, I estimate it is about 60-70km/hr. I couldnt feel anything below my knees.
I had a mechanical failure at 4500m(yeah right), I hid myself behind a short windbreak wall, a van picked me up and drove me to San Pedro de Atacama, it was only 70km to SPdA and I missed out the hellish decent, 2200m drop in 30km.
