Long stemmed Banksia nut goblets

jeudi 31 décembre 2015

I have made this type of goblets for some time now and have almost perfected the technique. The tallest goblet is 460 mm high whereas the smaller one is 360 mm high. The stems are turned from Jarrah timber and other parts are turned from recycled red gum fence posts.

Toy Steam Roller from Christmas toy pallet challenge

Congratulations to Crowie on his Christmas toy pallet challenge, and to all the people involved in organizing it.

It was a design that I had been thinking about for a long time, and when the Christmas toy pallet challenge came up, it galvanized me into action.

This is Mk2, about 25% bigger than Mk1 and slightly different. The wheels I made with a circle cutter, aka fly cutter in a (home made) drill press.

If anyone is interested, these are the plans for the toy steam roller from woodworkingdownunder.com

I am working on another version with wheels that steer, may be ready for next Christmas.

Also a few more photos attached of the build process:

Electric motor question

A few days ago the motor on my compressor stopped working.

It died right about when the outside temp was around 41ºC and the compressor has been running on and off at least 20 times during that day. My compressor is in an external enclosure and when I went to check what had happened I noticed the 240V 6" enclosure venting fan had been manually switched off! I figure I must have accidentally knocked it off as the switch is in the middle of my metal rack and it has happened before.

The VFD indicated the motor had a short and sure enough when I checked two of the unconnected coils had a ~10Ω resistance between them (should be open circuit). On opening up the motor it was clear that it had overheated. That 4kw motor had cost me $35 so I was not that fussed but I must put some sort of cover over that switch.

So, off to gumtree again where I found a Toshiba motor that had been on an Ingersol compressor. The owner had swapped out the 3P motor for a SP motor as he did not have 3P at his place. The motor is an open frame type (end caps have cast grill openings) "well used", but it meggered and checked out resistance wise OK. What surprises me is this thing has no external fan, just the short stubby fins attacked to one end of the rotor as usually found on grinder rotors.

The other thing that surprises me is that in between the end cap opposite the pulley, and the main body of the motor, is a large circular disc.
IMG_6270.jpg

This disc seems to effectively seal up one end of the motor so I can't see how it allows any sort of air flow through the motor.

My gut feeling is to leave the disc out and add a 6" 240V fan to the outside of the end cap to help cool the motor?
The compressor is well out of the way so no one except me is going to access the actual compressor
Can anyone see anything wrong with this idea.

Bless this water

A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband's temper.

The Doctor asks: "What's the problem?"

The woman says: "Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me."

The Doctor says: "I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don't swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down."

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.

The woman says: "Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?"

The Doctor says: "The water itself does nothing. It's keeping your mouth shut that does the trick."

Large gap between brickwork and window - how to remedy

Hi all

Following the installation of new windows in a wall, the upper brickwork was also redone.

However, there is a now gap (approx. 30 mm) between the top of the windows and the upper brick work. Not sure what the best way to cover this to prevent water (or small creatures) entering.

14 inch Bandsaw advice

Hi

I am looking for advice on 14 inch bandsaws , I am currently making bandsaw boxes and cutting 110mm thick hardwood with some pretty tight curves
I also need to resaw up to 9 inch to make veneers for guitar making.
I am looking for a good quality ( spend once spend right ) saw and am considering the Laguna 14/12 it stretches my budget a bit ( a lot ) do the forum members have any comments or other saws i recommendations ? regarding other saws I should look at ?

Thanks
Peba

Help with pallet furniture finish

Hi guys. I recently got a couple of bedside tables and a blanket box made up for me out of old pallets with no finish.

Since I know nothing about woodwork, I need some help figuring out what to finish them in. I want something that keeps the natural rustic kind of look and have posted some pics of what I would like the end result to be. I want the wood to darken and bring out the natural colours (like the sample pics) and don't want them to be shiny (varnish???) once finished.

Blanket box and bedside tables.

Sample finish that I would like to achieve

The range of different products and colours available at Bunnings was overwhelming for someone who knows nothing about wood. What do I need to get to achieve that kind of finish in the sample pictures?

Cheers
