What say you - acceptable or just waaaaay to dangerous on a sliding saw?

Today I witnessed something that eventually lead me to clear out of the area. This occurred in a public shed.

A former woodwork teacher of 25 years experience was running a 3+ metre length of 40x15mm pine through a 12" sliding table saw. He was not using the sliding table though - just pushing it through against the fence by hand and finishing off with a push stick (a very chewed up push stick at that). This is a 3 phase machine so presumably ~4 to 5 HP - PLENTY of grunt for a kickback.

About 300mm into the cut it started flapping up and down furiously, lifting about 80-100mm off the table. This was the end that had been cut. At other times there were various grinding noises and other chatter.

I witnessed the push stick slip off the end at least three times. At one point on a smaller length I saw that it had somehow lifted up at an angle of 30° from the table (the blade end lifted). The stick was clearly not under control - I did not see the preamble to this - just the resultant angled stick.

Somewhat concerned for my own safety I vacated the area (I was working on a bench within 3 metres of the blade). There were several sticks to be ripped down.

This behaviour struck me as stupendously hypocritical because earlier in the day, when this chap was ripping down a stick of hardwood for me, I was about to step over to the outfeed and help keep control of the stick. I was chipped by this character with "Number one rule - stay away from anyone working a machine, particularly if it's me."

With this flapping stick fiasco I would have offered my help, but I knew it would be rejected, so I just vacated.

I might add that this chap has a reputation for being an OH&S near-nazi - forever chipping people - and not once did I see him with ear defenders or face mask when operating a router, drop saw et al, all without extraction. From 8-10 metres away it was enough for me to reach for my ear muffs.

So, Brains Trust, am I being precious, and this is acceptable machinery use, or is it otherwise?

I'm particularly interested in comments from the pros here - what would happen to an apprentice of they did this?

I'd REALLY like to know what this chap would have said to one of his pupils if he saw them doing it.......
