How to cut a BSPT tapered tread?

samedi 20 septembre 2014

After some advice guys.

I need to make a new water jacket hose adapter for my Land Rover engine resto.

There is a 3/8BSPT thread in the engine block that I need to screw into.

I can turn the new brass fitting up and put new threads in the work-piece, but how do I use a 3/8 BSPT die to cut the male thread so that it screws into the engine block?

Do I start with a parallel shaft and run a BSPT die down it, or do I need to start with a tapered shaft??

Whilst I'm on the subject, if/when I use a BSPT tap, so I start with a standard drilled (parallel) hole or do I need a tapered hole?

Apologies if these are stupid questions!!

Thx

Jon
