Hi All,
Just a quick bit of background, about 18 months ago, with almost zero woodworking skills, I went out to the shed to try to whip up a small toy chest as we were expecting our first baby and it just seemed like a good idea for some reason. Since then I've been absolutely hooked on woodworking and seem to spend whatever spare time I can find learning more and practicing as much as I can. There is still a lot I am unsure about, and unfortunately I haven't been able to find any local classes, so what I learn comes predominately from this forum, youtube videos, and a fair bit of me making firewood. I think I've come a fair way, but one thing I'm still struggling to get my head around, is purchasing timber.
I'm still trying to make just about anything that I could use or might teach me new skills, (with the exception of woodturning, I was given an old lathe, but without someone to demonstrate how this works, or even if it works, the thing honestly scares the hell out of me). I'm really keen to understand timber better, and make more informed choices when it comes to the material for different projects, but I can't seem to find an inroad to this part of my new hobby. I recently made it to the Maleny Wood Expo and was able to purchase a few different varieties to play around with, but as time was short and I didn't have a chance to talk to many people, I still don't feel like I've got a timber source or the knowledge to even know what to ask for. I don't mind purchasing online, but I feel like I'd be paying a fairly high premium to do so due to shipping costs, and it doesn't help me understand the process or the product at all.
So I guess my question is, is there anyone here in the Toowoomba area that might be interested in sharing some of their knowledge about local sources for timber, or that might even be interested in taking me along on a supply run for their own needs to show me some of where and what they look for. Or can anyone recommend a source in the S.E. Qld area that might not mind dealing with someone with very little knowledge about what they're doing? I don't mind traveling to find what I need, but I don't want to waste anyone's time, or be treated like an idiot because I'm not armed with all the right information or asking the right questions.
Sorry for the long email, looking at it now it feels like I rambled a bit. Just a bit keen to talk to like minded people I guess :)
Kind Regards,
Shawn.
