mill tooling advice

vendredi 13 novembre 2015

Hi fellas,

I've got a project I'm about to start which will require milling a 7mm wide slot down the length of some 45mm bright round bar (free machining bright stock). I need to cut a slot the entire length (450mm) to a depth of 8.2mm and then run a T slot 13mm wide at the bottom of the slot the full length. The central 200mm requires the slot pass through the entire thickness of 45mm.

I'm only going to get one chance to get this right and was after your suggestions on which cutter to buy for this job. Should it be 2, 3 or 4 flute; carbide, HSS or something more exotic? And what length would you suggest; long or extra long?

Obviously it's going to be a 6mm diameter cutter.

Any suggestions, not only on a cutter choice but also advice on how best to proceed (traps to look out for) would be really appreciated.

Cheers,
Wayne
