A few years ago I posted on the forum about how 'fiddley' I found MIG (I have a Cigweld Transmig 180SE) and much preferred my little Ozito stick welder. I received a lot of helpful thoughts about using MIG, but still stuck with the stick welding.
Then had a bit of welding 'layoff' because of health issues. But all OK now!!
I recently posted asking about the benefit of O/A because of it's portability and no need of a generator. Most of the responses indicated it would be better to stick with the stick and use a generator!!
As I was mulling over that in terms of oxygen and acetylene cylinders are now available rent free at Bunnings, more equipment to buy, verses I already have a stick welder, etc, etc. I found myself sitting squarely on the fence!
Then my thoughts turned to my not much used Cigweld Transmig 180 that still has its second roll of gasless wire installed. So I thought I'd try MIG again. I removed, cleaned and reinstalled the liner. New tip. Removed any welding wire that looked suspect. Started with the voltage and wire speed indicated on the door panel and viola - I'm Mig welding! Can't believe how smooth it's going! Gasless - yep a bit splattery, but I can live with it. As I once read, almost like stick welding in terms of smoke and splatter, but easier to clean up!
So now - I'm converted! And along with that 'conversion' comes the want for a portable gasless MIG welder! I am so happy with my Cigweld Transmig 180 (even though over ten years old) I wouldn't mind having a smaller portable version. Mine was made in Australia, now Cigweld (and I guess most others) made in China! How much of the Cigweld quality has been compromised? Who knows!
So, I'm looking for a portable, gasless MIG. Want transformer based rather than inverter (will be used off generators of varying types and quality). I want a robust and reliable unit. Since this will be used outside only, will always be gasless. Would probably need a 15A plug, even though used primarily on
