Lopper review

lundi 9 novembre 2015

so following on from a previous thread i finally had my wallet jemmied open and spent some cash on some new loppers and some (hope) decent secateurs. to replace some cyclone ratchet loppers and fiskar secateurs

having researched and such forth i took Silents advice an ended up at forestrytools and bought some barnel stuff.although the wallet was open i wasnt going to go nuts so i guess ive kind of gone middle of the road.

I go the following
Barnel OR36A 91cm Professional Lopper

Barnel A32A 81cm Professional Anvil Lopper

Barnel B175 Pruner / secateurs

Barnel B300 Heavy Duty Precision Pruner/secateurs

so i did a test off against the current tools.. the current ratchet lopper immediately got stuck and annoyed the sht out of me trying to cut a decent piece of lilipilli and reminded me why i wanted a new set of loppers. so i gave the anvil lopers a go on the same stuff... click it went through no hassle. ok so its new and is sharper but just didnt have any of the the handle flex, the blade actually felt like it was attached to the handle and not some random thing that moves of its own will.... didnt test the longer handled non anvil version..well one chop resounding success...well pleased and used the anvil loppers for the rest of the day on the crud i was chopping up.

the secateurs... they are going to last i believe. they seem well made and are not as heavy as i expected. there are downsides when compared to the fiskars.the fiskars are easier for smaller hands. they are a bit better at cutting. however i can put more ooomph into the barnels(both of them) without feeling the handles give. The heavy duty barnells have a half open option which helps with smaller hands however i think for double the price of the fiskars i would probably get the cheaper barnels again rather than the heavy duty ones. however i hope neither will break in the near future so not an issue.

i think the biggest gain with the barnels will be the ability to buy replacement parts if required. i may be wrong on this. but at this stage after one day of reasonable use im happy with my purchase... and i can throw out them crppy ratchet things that have been annoying me for months!

ps forrestrytools is expensive compared to some other places but is the only place i could find everything i wanted so i just went with the oh damn it option of one purchase and not 2 or 3. the parcel arrived 2 days after i purchased it.
