I recently picked up 40 or so of my grandfather's moulding planes. As far as I can tell, many are Mathiesons planes.
I have reading up on refurbishing them, with some saying 0000 steel wool and blo, others saying DO NOT use steel wool, but rather a soft rag.
Does anyone have any sage words of advice ?
Also, one of the planes appears to be a small chamfer plane, but I doubt the blade is genuine as it seems to narrow for the wedge to bear down properly.

The throat of the plane is 1 1/2" wide. Any recommendations on finding a replacement ?
On the near side of the plane there is a groove that seems to be set to hold a plate and grub screw mechanism .. which is missing. What would this be for ?
