Hi fellow boxmakers, Up till a few weeks ago I had never even heard of Hornbeam timber. Then I ventured back down to Boutique Timbers (for more timber) and asked Mal what did he suggest for a guitar fretboard in a "blonde" colour. He showed me this Hornbeam timber and I bought a very large length of it. The timber is very very hard and the grain is sooo true, lovely to work with. After making a few fretboards I thought this might make a nice box, very different to the usual darker timber ones.
Here is the result. I am going to drop back in to Mal's place on my way back from Sydney end of August and pick up a couple more lengths whilst he still has some left in stock. I totally love this box. The timber being so hard my Danish Oil and Wax finish feels sooo smooth. I lined the bottoms with "blood leatherette", a nice contrast to the blonde colour. Lid insert and small handle is Australian Red Cedar.
