Hi all,
Probably something that has been covered before but I honestly don't know enough about the intricacies of hand planes to do a useful search.
I have a Stanley no 64 spokeshave that is in pretty good nick, but after using it for a little while today I found my hands became covered in a black, slightly oily substance that took some good soaping to get off. There didn't really seem to be much in the way of finish lost from the tool and giving it a wipe down with some paper rag didn't remove anything. And it most definitely didn't come from the timber I was working on.
So I'm a bit confused about the situation really, I've never had this happen with it before. Is this something I need to sand back and refinish, or could I put a sealant over it, or do I need to do something else entirely?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
