I'm just starting out making a blanket chest like the Jon Peters piece ... Blanket chest.jpg .. but with dados for the case construction, and edge banding on all 4 sides if the top, and I will finish with a wipe on poly.
I am using Grade AA marine ply 18mm for the box ... looking for ideas on the leg and face frame timber ... Jon uses poplar ... is this something like clear pine or even hoop pine?
Anyway ... I have cut the ply sheet so that the grain is horizontal on all sides. Is this good practice? Should the ends be vertical and the front horizontal? or all the same?
I have viewed many pictures of similar chests .. they are a mix ... but the chests that have raised panels seem to be vertical grain on the panel ... and slab timber seems to be horizontal on the front and a mix on the sides
I would really appreciate some "wisdom" on these matters please.
Thanks
Rob
