expert help needed

jeudi 10 septembre 2015

Hello. I have an idea for a type of engineered hardwood flooring. Instead of the planks having straight edges, they would have curved edges and form a repeating pattern. This is something I want to build myself or with the help of a manufacturing company, and eventually build a business around it.

I have been visiting flooring retailers in my area hoping they could put me in touch with someone who has knowledge of engineered flooring manufacturing process. So far no one has been able to help, so I'm turning to the internet for help :-)

My idea is to cut the desired shapes from large sheets of the veneers and wear layer already glued together. I have considered water jet, laser, high speed CNC router, as methods of cutting out the desired shapes.

I would buy veneer layers and glue them together myself, outsource the cutting to a local shop, then stain and finish the pieces myself. This is not going to be some big factory operation.

Any comments you may have are welcome.

I have so far found one manufacturer that produces a product similar to what I have in mind.

Anyone know how they would cut those shapes out in the above website? Someone suggested die cutting, but I have never heard of a die press able to cut 5/8" wood.

I've included a picture of a few sketches to give you an idea of what I have in mind.
