My daughters both asked for bookshelves. Youngest wanted a narrow (600 mm) bookshelf that would fit in the existing space stained in American Redwood stain to match existing furniture items. Oldest wanted a wider bookshelf in "weathered" pine to match existing furniture. I used "New Baltic Pine" to stain the wider shelf and I am glad that I did, as I did not have to wait for several years for the pine to yellow with age,
The shelves and sides are lipped for a chunkier look and to add lateral strength. The lips are rebated and glued in along the full length of each lip. But the lip made it difficult to fit kitchen style drawer runners. To solve this there are are spacers that are the same thickness as the "lip" to support the drawer runners.
There is a 5 mm gap between the end of each shelf and the side - This is a design feature.
The back is made from high quality 7 mm V-grooved plywood panels. I decided to stain them black rather than the same colour as the shelves and sides and use blck stain rather than than paint. I made the drawers from the 7 mm plywood off cuts. These make light, but sturdy drawers (I don't like to over engineer)
Apart from that, all timber is premium quality pine shelving pine from a major hardware store. I wanted deep shelves, therefore I had to glue up boards for the shelves and the sides, using home made bar clamps that I mentioned in another post some time ago.
Enjoy...:U
