Measure twice, cut once.

Ok , did that, still stuffed it up.

Last year I bought a new (old) house. I spend 3 months camping in the garage renovating it with the plan to rent it out for a couple of years. Worst house in best street, over looking the water. After doing the reno, I could not bring myself to rent it out so here we are now. The reno's are ongoing and I reckon I have a year or so to go yet! All the major stuff done, now its the little things.

Anyway, the latest job I was told had to be completed by Christmas was the replacement of some old timber balustrade with a new glass version. This required the removal of some floorboards and installation of some new support bearers, and finally a solid piece of timber to mount the glass spigots and to neaten the job up. I chose merbau because its cheap and available in large DAR sizes. The main piece being a 140 * 42 DAR 2.4m in length. Cost about $65.

I measure the job up, mark it out ready for cutting then sit down and have a beer (cutting to be done the next day). Decide to remeasure and realise I was out by 15mm. Sweet, save that piece of timber. Next day I take it downstairs, cut it then bring it back up only to find its 15mm to short... I cut along the wrong cutline. :ranting2:

So I measured twice, cut once. Next time I will use an eraser if I mark out incorrectly. Anyway, I have a 2m long piece of 140*42 Merbau now to do something with. I do like working with Merbau, so at least I have that going for me, which is nice (meme).

I did not stuff up the new piece, its all installed and fits nicely now.
