I need to fix two LVL beams together to act as a bearer for the rafters of a mezzanine floor/ceiling. The beams I am buying (at a good price - unused from someone elses project) are over dimension for what I need according to the span tables. Nevertheless they still need to be nailed together. I have looked at the relevant Hyspan literature from which the excerpt below comes from.

The beams I will nailing together are 360mm x 45mm. As you can see the recommended nail length is 90mm.
The question I have is that given the finished width of the beam will be 90mm then isnÂt there a possibility that I will get a tiny amount of nail protrusion on each side of the beam - or should the bead of Âelastomeric sealant (Sikaflex) provide sufficient extra width to prevent this happening. If that is so - should I use any sort of spacers to ensure a correct bead width?
If I do get a small amount of nail protrusion what is the best way to deal with this? Just leave it (beam can be covered with Gyprock) or use an angle grinder to remove any ÂpointsÂ?
Thanks
