Disston 14" Backsaw 1876-77

samedi 22 août 2015

One of the last weekends of the summer for estate sale searching netted me a Disston 14" backsaw with an 1876-77 medallion. The handle is beautiful, with just one small chip in the lower horn. That's where the good news ends. The two sawnuts and medallion are there, but the medallion was snapped off inside. Also, the blade was massively rusted and there was major pitting underneath. I believe I've gotten rid of the rust, but my question is do I continue to sand until the pitting is gone? Will that take too much of the blade away? I applied two coats of paste wax to the blade. Is there still rust inside the pitting?

Regards,
Dave
