I'm building a blanket chest. The main box/carcase part of it is 850mm long, 540mm wide, and 540mm tall, at least on paper.
The timber is Tassie Oak (Eucalyptus regnans)
I've reached the point where I've glued up the panels and now it's time to plane them flat and correct any small problems with them before cutting the dovetails.
I'm not sure what happened, but the panels have all twisted during the glue up. I don't know if there's a problem with my thickness planer, maybe my clamps are out of symmetry, or maybe my square is screwy, but they are in pretty rough shape.
I've gotten the scrub plane out and attacked the worst one. After much planing, it is now only 11mm thick. By the time I hit it with the smoothing plane, I expect it is likely to be 10mm thick.
Is it pretty safe to say that this project is ruined? My intention was for this box to be the type of thing that lives at the foot of a bed and doubles as a bench for putting on shoes, etc.
I feel like this is likely to be too thin to put hinges into with any realistic expectation that it will support the top. I also feel like the dovetails will be so small that it will look disproportionate.
So what do people thing about me continuing with the project as is? Is there any way to salvage this?
Pretty much interested in hearing any thoughts.
Cheers,
Luke
