Craftsman Spindle Update.

mercredi 4 février 2015

The spindle is now out of my lathe, removed by using a puller made up form a 6" section of hollow tube and a length of 1/2" threaded rod (as suggested by Mal AMH). (Not having a working lathe, locating a piece of pipe of the correct dimensions was a bit tricky.) The shaft had been damaged from the pulley oil plug being bottomed into the bearing surface. It was VERY difficult to pull the bruised and mildly scored spindle past the pulley and bull gear.

For those who own a Craftsman; you may be interested to know that the spindle is different to the standard roller bearing model. The Craftsman spindle is on the right of the vertical photo and on the top of the horizontal photo. The reason for the difference appears to be due to the need to reposition the back gear to accommodate the under drive spindle V belt.

A local machine shop has indicated that it is a straightforward job to modify a standard roller bearing spindle to fit the Craftsman, as the critical overall dimensions are the same.

Many thanks to those who have offered assistance! :-).
