I tried to add a post to this thread, http://ift.tt/1lo6gM9 but found out I couldn't as it was over 365 days old, one learns something every day.
To cut to the chase, I now have a Quicky 3m tape measure, in fact I have two of them as well as another 2m one, plus my original one back home.
I'm currently sitting in my sister in-laws place in a suburb of Munich Germany, fondling said tape measure. :o
The 3m Quicky is all it is advertised to be and more, nothing like the 2m version still selling in Australia. Once you've had a 3m Quicky with the little lever in the centre, you'll never want to use the 2m original version still being sold in Australia.
I bought two of them and had them mailed to me, as where we are, none of the hardware chain stores stock them. Just like Australia they seem to stock house brand name tools (think Ozito), with the more exotic stuff relegated to specialist stores.
Wasn't a problem, bought the two them off German Ebay, for Euro 20.31 delivered. Works out to around $16.00 AUD each and could have been less if purchased outside the EU as there is a 19% GST in Germany.
This is where I bought it, even though the picture shows a 2m version, the part number is for the 3m version.

I have no Idea why it doesn't appear to be on sale in Australia, perhaps the importer got burnt by only stocking the 2m version. 2m just doesn't cut it, when most man made materials come in 2.4m lengths
Mick.
