Rebirthing old neglected planes.

jeudi 10 décembre 2015

It's only been two years, but a journey nonetheless. A learning experience, and I know only what I have learned hands on. All corrections welcomed.

Buying from farm sales the planes are cheap. Some lovely surprises no doubt, but often very distressed tools. Even one with the mouth fully rusted into the cutter. And yet it eventually came out clean and square.

So. For a very sad looking plane.

12 hours in vinegar. Blows the "granulated" rust off without eating anything much and also takes off sump oil, general crud or whatever the farmer has caked onto the metal.. Tooth brush scrub. Film of surface rust might still be there in some places.

Dip in water!!!! Wait 24 hours. Film of flash rust now everywhere.

12 hours in 4:1 phosphoric acid. Missing Japanning is now protected from new rust and all the bare metal is grey.

Hit (intended) bare metal with 3M varnish/paint remover drill mounted wheel maroon in colour. This strips off the grey iron phosphate from the phosphoric acid bath nicely.

Cloth wheel on grinder spindle to polish bare bits.
