QLD Atkins No.53 24" Panel saw fully restored.

dimanche 13 décembre 2015

Good evening everyone.

This is the first of about seven listings and eight saws I intend putting up for sale tonight all being well. In the past I have put my saws up for sale on Ebay, but would like to interest Forum members. If they don't sell here I will resort to Ebay, but they will be cheaper here as I don't have to share the profits (miserable such as they are).

All the saws posted will be suitable as user saws although it is up to the purchaser as to how they are utilised. There is one exception to that which is the Robert Sorby panel saw. More on that in the separate listing.

My intention was to list a range of saws both in purpose and price so if you are somebody who wishes to explore the dark side, this is your opportunity.

The first offering is a delightful Atkins No.53 panel saw. Atkins, as many of you know was one of the big three American manufacturers and to my mind does not always get the recognition they deserve. This particular saw is a delight to use and was featured in the Blue Mountains GTG thread where we set up some dust extraction to minimise the sawdust in Fence Furniture's immaculate shed .

The saw still bears the marks of the timber on the teeth as you can see in the pix below, but rest assured that if you purchase the saw I will freshen the teeth before sending it on so it will be as sharp as possible.

The saw has a high sheen to it with only the lightest staining and no pitting. It is 9ppi sharpened with sloping gullets to maximise sawdust removal. This saw is an excellent performer. One feature of this particular Atkins saw is the handle. It is Atkins "perfection" handle. Not all their saws had this style of handle. Their "perfection" handle really is about the most comfortable handle I have ever used and this one comes with the floral pattern and four brass sawnuts.

The saw was jointed, shaped, set and hand sharpened. If you are having trouble deciding between a full size hand saw and a panel saw this one is a definite candidate.

The only real flaw is a common one with Atkins saws and it is that their etches were faint even on a good day. This one is all but gone. Just enough there to establish it is an Atkins and before it was cleaned I could discern the model number too.

I believe this saw would be from the WW1 era making it close to 100 years old. It has lasted very well. This listing is for a Buy it Now price. Payment to be by direct transfer and postage at the expense of the purchaser.

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask either here or in a PM and thank you for looking and you might like to keep your eyes peeled for my other sales.

Regards
Paul
