My latest Nintendo Wii box

samedi 26 décembre 2015

I was asked to make a box last Xmas 2014 for my 9 yr old autistic grandson to house his Wii and WiiU stuff, comprising 4 DVD cases the games come in, two Wii controllers, one large WiiU controller, and 4 Amiibo characters. For various reasons, I was unable to make it, so this year decided to make it for Xmas 2015. Missed the deadline by two days, mainly because of faulty brass hardware that had to be replaced and a poor final finish coat of oil.

Finally finished, and pics below. the overall dimensions are 430L x 230D x 170H. The 12.5mm thick carcase is made out of Maple Silkwood, and has this lustrous finish that changes with the angle of the light, just like silk material. It is named for this quality, and not after the small township just north of here near Tully. Not easy to work with, edges tend to get furry, and when pulling some blue painters tape off, the wood came away with the tape in fine strips. As with all soft woods, chisels and planes have to be razor sharp to cut neatly.

The lid is a floating lid of WA Jarrah, 14 mm thick. Overall the lid came to 1.4kg in weight, hence the three brass butt hinges and the brass lid stay. A lot more work, but using strap hinges like the SmartHinges would have led to damage from the momentum of the lid being opened carelessly. The lid lift and the corner slipfeathers ( keys) are made of jarrah.

The tray is made of Northern Silky Oak with green felt finish. The grandson is going through a phase where everything has to be green, shoes, cap, shirt, swimming costume etc.

The dividers in the bottom of the box are 6mm thick Northern Silky Oak, with all the joints hidden in stopped rebates. After cutting the various pieces to size, I then did a dry fit. The assembly of the dividers was so snug and tight I could not remove them, so they are all in situ, no glue required. Looking down on the open box, the first two LH sections are for the Wii controllers, the the four small square sections are for the Amiibo characters. The right hand section is for the 4 Game DVDs. The large WiiU controller fits neatly in the tray.

The last three pics show how the appearance of the Maple Silkwood changes with the viewing angle.

The box is finished with 3 coats of Kunos #244 oil. Brass hinges are by Anton Gerner, and each turned out to be a different length, which was a bit of a PIA when making the recesses in the sides and lid. Brass stay is from Good and Chattels in Brisbane, and brass handles are from Graeme Brown Antiques in Melbourne.

PS Did anyone notice how it was not properly finished? Too much of a rush to photograph it while the sun was out :)
