Can particle board be sealed?

I'm redoing my bathroom, and building a nice basin out of stringybark, but for the drawers, I've got a mass of particle board leftover. Is it safe enough to use them for the draws (faced with stringybark)? I was hoping they'd be alright if I painted them with something like an outdoor paint?

Or is it just a recipe for disaster?
