Just started carving a samburu girl hiking pole based on "Ian Norbury " book "sculpting female faces & figures"The origanl work was carved in walnut .The smaburu tribe have resisted eupean culture and still there ancient tradition,and there young women are exceptionly beautiful
Some minor modification of the patterns have been made to fit on a hiking pole.The pattern has been reduced to sit on a hikingpole with a 45 degree base .The origanl sculpture was 7.5" x 11" x 15"" .Mine has been reduced to 6" tall 3" wide and 2.75" wide so it will sit on the shank.photo 1 origal piece by ian norbury.2=6 templates. 7 center hole cut ready for treaded rod. 89 blank cut ready for carving
I used teak for this carving and had damaged my dust mask and had no replacements on hand ,but wanted to see what it wouls sand up like so just sanded a peiece after i had put the face in the round without a dust mask on. The dust was very fine and had a bad reaction from it sore eyes runny nose couldnt stop coughting , .Checked it out on the net after the event not good, it can cause allergies to other woods as well i have never had a problem with wood dust before but this was bad i certainly wont work it with out a dust mask on again
