8" Grinder

samedi 23 août 2014

Hi Guys,

Just updating progress on my grinder. I've now got the clamping discs made and also the reducer for the wheel hub.

This is the grinder and the new wheel that I bought from Abtec here in the UK. The 8" diameter wheel is a ceramic 60 grit one with a 50.8 mm (2.0") centre hole, made by "Tyrolit" who are one of the Swarovski group of companies.

These pictures show the inch thick slice off the end of a length of 303 stainless steel bar. I cut it in half with a hacksaw and faced each side to give me two 6.5 mm thick discs. These were then drilled 12 mm and then bored out to 0.5" so they are a close fit on the grinder shaft. Each disc has a 2.25" diameter 0.1" deep recess turned in one side. I also made a 4 mm thick washer to go under the securing nut.

Since I needed a reducer for the hub of the grinding wheel, I was going to cut a slice off the end of a 2.25" diameter nylon bar. However I came across this broken plastic castor, so I drilled out the shaft and opened the hole up to 0.5" diameter. Put it on a mandrel and turned it down to 2.0". I made it an easy push fit in the wheel.

At the moment there are no guards for either end of the grinder, they are the next items to be made. But they will have to wait until I can get hold of some suitable sheet steel.
