concrete post on front verandah

Hey guys, need some help. I've got this post which is concrete on my front verandah. My idea was I was going to chip away at the top and bottom and then box the post with wood surrounds and then paint it soit would become a square post. Does anyone have any better ideas to get a similar result without knocking the whole post out(which seems like a lot of work). Attached are a few photos of what I'm dealing with.
