Hi all,
I have some welding samples from work that I've sectioned and I'd like to etch them to try to have a look at the microstructure of the weld area. The samples are Manganese steel (Hadfield's Steel), some welded with mild steel filler, some welded with stainless.
Unfortunately, everywhere I go, my requests for Nital and Picral are met with blank stares and requests for nitric acid are met with suspicious ones. I've tried the following alternatives: hydrochloric acid (from a pool shop), sulphuric (car battery), oxalic acid, phosphoric acid (rust converter), hydrochloric acid + methanol, hydrochloric acid + some other solvent (brick cleaner), boric acid (borax) and garlic salt (I didnÂt have any normal salt).
Does anyone know of a place near Melbourne where I could buy some Nital?
