What product to use on timber front door?

mardi 27 janvier 2015

Hi,

I'm hoping to get some advice on what I should do to restore the brand-new look on my timber front door.

The door is just over 2 years old, and was part of this new house when we moved in. The front of our house faces north, and so the timber door gets a lot of sun exposure throughout the year. I haven't done anything to the door since we moved in, and I've noticed (since about 3 months ago) that it's beginning to look a bit worn out. Notice in the photos beow that the bottom half of the door looks worse than the top half. This is because there is some shelter above the door, which provides some shade to the top half of the door. Also note that the door does not usually get any wet (unless there's a big storm etc).

Here are 2 photos showing how the door looks now:

And here is a photo of the inside of the door, which of course still looks pretty much the same as when we first moved in. I'd like to get the front of the door to look like this. (The colour tone in the photo is misleading, but hopefully you get the idea of what I'm after. Also, it's not glossy, just more of a satin look.)

The outside of the door also feels a tiny bit rough now, whereas the inside still feels smooth. Does this mean I'd need to do some sanding? I was hoping I might be able to avoid that, given the door is only about 2 years old.

I've done some level of research, and the Feast Watson Weatherproof Varnish looks like it could be the right product? (Product link here). I've also been recommended the Sikkens Cetol HLSe and the Sikkens Filter 7 Plus. But of course I have zero knowledge or experience on these things, and so was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on what product is appropriate, and what I should actually do.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Cheers.
