hey guys, im currently designing a coffee table and one of the joins has had my brain fade. Im sure I already know the answer, but its stuck inside my head and wont come out. nothing is set in stone yet, anything and everything can be changed. timber species and size are yet to be confirmed, im thinking something like a maple frame and a spotted gum top for a bit of contrast. please see picture.

So the question is, how do I join the legs to that top center rail. i figured I can just dowel the joint thru n thru and use the tabletop species for the dowels as a bit of contrast against the blonde hardwood frame. that joint wont be under a lot of stress so the dowels will be good enough...but my mind keeps telling me there is a better way.
and then secondly, I want the top to be separate from the frame. anyone have a good idea of attaching the top to the dowels without glue and without screwing down through the top and into the end of the dowel.
and for anyone wondering what my plans are for the rest of it, the knee joint in the legs will be a simple finger/box joint and the joint between the leg and other rails will be mortise n tenon, and the dowels will be seated into a drilled hole in the rail and glued in and ill probably screw from underneath aswell as a clamp while the glue dries.
Thanks :)
