Laguna 8" Parallelogram Jointer - Ongoing review

mercredi 23 septembre 2015

Given that I was unable to find any decent reviews on the Laguna Jointer, I thought I would post up my findings as I learn to use the machine. I took delivery of it yesterday, and started setting it up today.

Out of the box it was pretty easy, all I had to do was install the guard. I noticed on the box, that it says the machine has a 2HP motor (gasp), but when you inspect the motor it is indeed a 3HP machine.

After initial inspection, its obvious that the fence is not square to the table, and the table is not coplaner. Its not far out (I will measure it before I adjust anything), but its enough to bother me. I am not to fussed on the repeatability of the stops that set the fence square either, but I would be surprised if this is unique to this jointer. I dare say that anytime the fence is adjusted it will require the use of a square.

Even though I know its not set up yet, I still have to run some timber through it right? So I grabbed a couple of pieces of pine from the packing material and buzzed them. Its a quiet machine, very quiet. The edges were not parallel, but given the quality of the packing timber its hard to pass judgement on the machine! Even though they were not parallel, they were pretty damn close. I also faced the boards, and there was a little snipe on the end which I suspect will disappear once the tables are correctly set. I was looking for some hardwood to put through, but I couldn't find any denailed pieces at this point. Recycled hardwood will be the main victim of this machine, so time will tell.

I do have on question for the masses, and that is what is the best straight edge to use for setting up the machine? I have a 1m lufkin steel rule, but I am not sure if I trust it. I will check it for accuracy at some point.
