Old school patternmakers corebox planes.

vendredi 25 septembre 2015

Just posting this one for interests sake and general perusal.
Started my patternmaking apprenticeship in 1980 and bought a complete tool kit from an older guy who had retired some years before.
One of the more interesting sets in the toolbox was this set of round soled corebox planes.

DSCF4965.jpg Starting with the larger one on the right hand side, this one has 6 interchangeable soles with 6,8,10,12,18 and 24" diameter end profiles. It also has the matching profile blades to go with each sole. The blades are held in place with a simple wedge.
DSCF4966.jpg The soles have a brass screw in the centre at each end and slot into brass receptors on the base of the plane body.
DSCF4970.jpg The smaller 2 on the left have a fixed radius size on the base and therefore don't have an interchangeable sole.
DSCF4969.jpg The blades are all from W.Marples and sons, Hibernia, Sheffield except one that is marked Ahrem's Goodline Germany.
The actual planes look like they are made from coachwood.
I imagine back in the day folk would make their own plane bodies and then buy the blades for them. Just can't imagine Marples making wooden plane bodies?.
These guys are pretty well obsolete these days due to milling machines etc. For the most part these ones have been in the same box since I bought them, however very occasionally I will use one if a particular job requires it.
