Hercus and Southbend

mardi 22 septembre 2015

What's the connection between Hercus and Southbend?

Did Hercus get the rights to reproduce the 9" Southbend lathe, kit and caboodle? Drawing for drawing, casting for casting, part for part.

I know Hercus, in later years, modified the tailstock to have a lever lock in lieu of spanner/nut combination, and Hercus introduced the roller bearing headstock. As far as I know, Southbend did not.

Was the Hercus 260 Australian, or was that a Southbend copy? Pity we couldn't design our own lathe, all those years ago. Or did we?

Did Hercus ever supply Southbend with lathes during the war. Mal, do you have any insight on this?

Ken
