What we have here is a big heavy cast lathe bed, head stock, tail stock and banjo.
I picked this up off a bloke with the idea of building it up as a lathe for myself.
But I am running a bit short on time and space at the moment.
It WILL make a ball tearer of a lathe.
It is all cast and serioulsy heavy......we pulled it appart to get it onto my trailer. ( the headstock unbolts.
Just lifting the tail stock is a straight back, bend ze knees and eat ya wheaties job.
There are no makers markings that I can find......but " you can just feel the quality"
The center height is 305mm and by the time it is fitted with a chuck and tail centre it will end up being around 600mm between centres.
Overa ll its about 5 feet long.
The head stock has white metal bearings that seem to be in good knick ( no appreciable play and the shaft turns)......but I strogly recommend a disassembly and propper clean.
The main shaft is solid..I recon it is 1 1/2, the chuck end has been turned down and threaded to something arround 36mm diamter..I don't know what the thread is.
Serioulsy beefy main shaft.
There is a 3 step twin belt pully stack, on the main shaft and a matching stack to go on the motor......no motor supplied.
Both the main shaft pully stack and the one for the motor have the largest end flange chipped off.
I have spoken and shown to a fitter and turner mate....he recons it would not be a problem to repair the pullies....there are a couple of options.
The tail stock is one of the larger morse tapers....I'm guessing #4....But I have not measured it up.
There are a few things I would do the the tail stock....but as it stands, its all there.
The banjo is a nice beefy piece of work, but there is no back plate, tool rest or locking bolts......all trivial to make.
There is no motor, chuck or any accessories......its a lathe project and what you see is what you get.
The centre heaight is a bit low if the legs are direct on the ground.......lathes of this age where often mounted on big cement blocks ( as if they where not heavy enough already)
My reconing is that for my 5 foot 8 it needs to be lifted about 150mm.
I was planning to build a base out of 150 x 150 SHS.
It is a beefy piece of work and by the colour, my be ex army.
My thaught was to fit it with a 2400ish RPM 3 phase motor and a VFD.
With a bit of work and some modest expenditure this would make a ball tearer of a lathe and at a fraction of the cost of something comparable new.
Check out the pictures.
The 20 litre drum is shown to indicate scale and size.
I have not got the time to complete this project and it needs to move along before rust takes it toll and my brownie points run out with SWMBO.
I'm asking $150...and its worth every penny....first in first served
Cheers
