Eccentric Adjuster for Optical Micrometer

This thread is probably only for Stuart's benefit but....

I had mentioned to Stuart a while back that I was going to discuss with him the merits, or lack of, of an idea I had to provide focusing adjustment for my mill's micrometers. This discussion was meant to have taken place during a recent visit to Stuart's but viewing his fine Hauser borer and collection of microscopes eclipsed the discussion.

The mill's original OPL micrometers were imperial. I found a pair of metric mics on French eBay - http://ift.tt/1HR7zhA

The mics are probably from a machine other than a 13 because I could not position the X axis mic where the projected image was focused and correctly located over the scale graduations. The original micrometers were provided with a pair of clamping screws one of which was eccentric to provide adjustment for focusing. I needed a larger range of adjustment.

My initial idea was a pair of large diameter wheels each with an offset mounting hole and each with a centrally located mounting spigot. The upper wheel was to be cut away to provide clearance for the lower wheel which was to provide most of the adjustment. I abandoned the two wheel arrangement in preference of a simple offset link for the top mount. The knurled "nuts" accommodate M6 cap screws. In hindsight, the capscrews and nuts could have been replaced with a threaded knurled thumb screw. The original two pin hole nuts were a real pain in the neck to adjust without an appropriate pin spanner. And I never got around to making that pin spanner.

The effort making the parts was justified. The mic is now focused.*

I used 1045 for the bits and pieces and dunked them in Blackfast. I've been using the same mixed up Blackfast solutions for a few years now and black is more like grey. Probably time for a new batch.

* The micrometer's projected image is not overly crisp. Experimenting with different lamps, LED and incandescent, produced varying results. The brighter but more diffused light the better.

I have found a E10 Cree lamp on eBay that might have promise. ..... Who knows? You blokes would just install a DRO. :U
