Saw stand for Hyco tilt top saw

lundi 10 août 2015

I need some help please.

I've recently restored this Hyco tilt top saw, and I'm struggling to decide what kind of stand to build for it. It has the tilting top so I can't just build it into some sort of cabinet, and anyway I don't want to hide the wonderful old cast iron, not to mention the height adjuster wheel and depth scale on the side. I think the saw is late 40s/early 50s, made by Hyco in Sydney, and by all accounts based on a very similar looking Walker-Turner (I have one of those too). The stand only needs to be about 600mm high to bring the cast table up to a suitable working height.

So my options seem to be:
A welded stand using 50 x 50 angle iron for the legs to make it look sort of like a cast iron stand.
A welded 50 x 50 square steel tube frame, which would look neat and tidy, but not exactly age matched to the saw.
Some sort of plywood box base, styled and painted to look like a cast iron base.

The pictures below are of the saw mocked up on a chipboard base for testing and to get some ideas about motor locations and belt lines. I'm going to be placing the motor directly under the saw to get it out of the way and out of the sawdust.

I really don't know enough about old woodworking machinery to make a guess as to what would have been used when the machines were new. Can anyone offer any advice, or even pictures of an original stand from this era? Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks,
Graham.
