There have been some very good attempts at automating the control side of the DE, Corrimal Men's Shed being the best I know but it has up to now been a bit of a journey with some specialist knowledge needed and some decent coin invested. I came across this today......

It has some issues in execution but the basic idea is there for not much money. The gates do not fully open, the bits of wire might be life limited and the servos definitely won't operate a 150mm home made gate but the basics are all there for anyone to build on. My want list would be automatic start on machine start to take away the need for a remote control but that has a problem though as the ramp up time on a vfd means there is no immediate DE operation when the machine is started which is a pain in the bum. In the comments section of the video someone suggested a central locking door actuator instead of a servo and if used with a suitable bell crank should work well.
