I've got a commission to build a display case to hold real swords and scabbards (actual live blade stuff, not "pretty to look at" muck) and the fella wants a naturally dark, or possibly deep red, timber. No stain allowed anywhere.
The running joke has been to use Ebony but we both know we're not billionaires :q
I have a stack of elm I could use but I don't think it's dark enough.
I'm going to suggest Tas. blackwood or redgum because I know where to get quality lengths, but am wondering what else might be out there that's obtainable within Victoria (even if it's a few hours drive to get ala tassietimbers' stuff), or could be delivered here from interstate for a reasonable price.
No solid budget has been set yet, and he hasn't specified any particular features other than color, so hit me with your best shots :)
