Hi, I was given a couple of boards of old timber from a mate in Tully. They were covered in white paint, and had nail holes in them. He said it had been used on a house, but not sure specifically what it was used for. My mate called it red oak, but I cannot find any reference to red oak in my books.
I showed an 85 yr old guy here in Townsville with a lifetime of woodworking experience, and he said it was "hard" silky oak, as distinct from normal soft silky oak. I had never heard of theis "hard" version before, but admittedly, it was much harder on the thicknesser than the standard northern silky oak, and it felt a much denser, heavier timber.
Can anyone please help me identify this timber?
