Buying Soil

mercredi 12 novembre 2014

My backyard de-pavering and de-concreting has come quite some way. The pavers are out and 3 tonnes of concrete just went to the tip so now I'm ready to buy some soil.

A couple of questions:

1. What, exactly, do I need to ask for. I just want normal soil for the backyard to grow plants, lawn, whatever. I think this is sold as "loam"? Anything specific I need to know or is it all the same?

2. Regarding quantity. I've calculated the volume based on decent measurements. I've measured the volume to fill but is compaction going to be an issue? Eg, is the quantity of "as sold" soil that I need different to the volume that I want to fill due to it settling / compacting naturally in normal use by being walked on etc? Or do I just buy the exact volume that I need to fill the area with?

PS - Anyone in Hobart have any suggestions as to the best supplier? I'm on the Eastern Shore.

Thanks :)
