900 x 900 table from a fence

lundi 10 novembre 2014

My partner and I are hoping to participate in a "Welcome to Country" ceremony with the local Gundungurra and Darug people. It is traditional to present them with a gift from your local area, but as a gub (white fella) I don't really have an area, so I'm hoping that this table will suffice, and that they can use it in the Cultural Centre.

This time round I glued the palings to a sheet of MDF (ok, ok, but at least it was a recycled piece :D) and this is much better for controlling cupping (but oh man I need some Frontline clamps). The whole sheet did cup a little bit but I was able to get it pretty close to flat by clamping it down before screwing to the frame with blocks (floating top). This yielded a couple of small cracks (but not until a week later after 6 coats of Danish Oil ) which I'll fill with pure bees wax.

Fence posts were used for the tapered legs and some 4x2 Douglas Fir from the Bowling Club score for the rails (is that the right term?). Figured Spotted Gum for the trim (for it's strength).
