I had part of a bamboo floor plank in the garage for a little while and thought that I try and make a pen out of it. Now I am aware that this can be very hard if it is made a certain way(woven).
I cleaned the finish and made it flat before cutting into strips. I wanted it to be a little thicker as I sometime tend to drift a little when drilling holes for the pens as I like to expose a little bit of the end grain. I waited 24 hours after gluing the tube and put them on the lathe to turn.
I found that I was not getting a nice shaving or even getting a cut. I found it very difficult to make inroads in making this round. I used spindle roughing gouge, bowl gouge, detail gouge, scrapers and skew chisels. I had sharpen and resharpen with little or no effect.
Those of you that have tried to make pens from bamboo what has been your experience?
