Hi all fellow boxmakers, and a Happy New Year to you all. Hope 2016 is a top year for you.
I seen this box somewhere and thought, I have to make this. So I found the plans on the USA Rockler site. Free plans. I made one first with a couple of mistakes then worked out a better way to do it and made up templates so it is easy to mass produce them, if need be. I varied the plans a bit, eliminated the exit channel, definitely didnt use screws to join the lid to the tray. The template I made for the routering is very large to allow my small plunge router to follow easy with no chance of it running away.
This is the site so that what I am saying makes sense.
How to Make a Tambour-topped Box / Rockler How-to
Here are the pics of my completed one, all done in African Mahogany with the drawer being Pacific Maple for a small contrast. The front of the drawer is still African Mahogany though.
Slightly off subject here, I hope 2016 will be the year of the acoustic guitar for me. I have now made 5 solid body electric guitars, and whilst away for two weeks over the Christmas period catching up with the kids and their kids, I happened to spend a couple of hours with a professional stringed instrument maker who not only makes guitars, ukeleles, harps and other stringed instruments I cant even remember the name of, he also runs courses and teaches how to make bush furniture, totally without power machinery. Absolutely fascinating having him giving me a run through on his methods. Lathe worked from a foot pedal using string etc, amazing. He motivated me giving me a run through on acoustic guitar and ukelele methods to the extent I want to try and now make an acoustic guitar. I've ordered a book from the USA, which this chap says is the best book to buy, I'm researching bending timber, getting all this into my head at this stage.
