Mountain Ash Slab Dining Table

mardi 5 janvier 2016

Hi all,

About 6 months ago I posted in the the restoration forum asking for advice on restoring an old mountain ash slab. Thanks to those who gave their thoughts and advice. Finally yesterday I finished the table! Being my first major woodworking project I've certainly learnt a lot and had fun figuring out how to go about it. Plenty of useful information was gained from the forums and while if I was to do it again I would do a few things differently I'm pretty happy with how its all turned out.

The slab was pretty dirty and had a few uneven bits due to the way it was originally milled, so first step was to find somewhere that had a drum sander big enough to run the top through to even everything out. There were also a number of cracks and imperfections in the timber that had to be filled and repaired. I chose to fill them with clear epoxy, then spent ages sanding everything back flush. If I was to fill everything again I might tint the epoxy black, but you can only really see the epoxy is clear when you directly shine a light into the cracks, which I kind of like anyway.

After much research and consideration I decided to finish the top with Osmo Polyx in satin. After speaking to the Osmo supplier I sanded the top back to 180 and applied the Osmo. So far I have been really happy with the finish. Really easy to apply, water and stain resistant and the odd hot cup of coffee that's been inadvertently placed on the table has not done any damage.

The final step was to make some new legs as I wasn't a big fan of the original legs. Using some recycled blackbutt with vic ash tenons, I had a go at floating tenon joints to make the new legs. Again not perfect but a good learning experience. Insect holes in the blackbutt I filled with ebony Timbermate, then finished like the top. Sanded to 180 then applied Osmo.

Now to see if the photos have attached properly and time to start planning my next project, a Spotted Gum outdoor table.

Cheers,
Danger
